Advisory Email – June 2019

In the view of transparency, below is an excerpt from an advisory email I sent this month:

In January, I set out on a journey to help companies attract better-aligned talent and help job seekers find work they love. Here’s what’s happened in the last 6 months:

PROGRESS 🎉

  • Impact Career Fair (ICF2019)
    • May 29th, 2019
    • 1183 registered, 423 checked-in
    • Company NPS (Net Promoter Score, an indicator of satisfaction) – 6.2 (that’s bad)
    • Attendee NPS – 6.3
    • Read about my reflections on what went wrong and what to improve.
    • TBD if any hires were made from the fair. Most of the companies mentioned that they had good prospects to follow-up with.
  • HR Roundtable
    • We had beers & snacks on the rooftop of SES Consulting where we got to learn more about the personalities and people behind HR and recruiting in some of Vancouver’s leading companies
    • Got me hooked on listening to the RadioLab podcast at 2X speed.
  • ValueHiring.com
    • Traffic definitely spiked in May with the career fair. Job listings get an average of 10 views a month, 2-3 exits happen from each job posting page, suggesting a click-through to the company’s career page.

GRATITUDE WALL 🤝

  • The amazing volunteers for making ICF2019 possible, special thanks to RADIUS SFU for providing the venue and Preview Careers for co-organizing.
  • All the companies for taking the leap and trying this out with me.
  • Anthony Pak, a fellow mastermind buddy for a great brainstorming session to help me clarify the next steps.
  • Ryan St. Germaine from BC Jobs for sharing insights on the recruitment space.

NEXT STEPS 👣

  1. Be a B2B service company where we will focus on advising and supporting companies with implementing an end-to-end HR process:
    • Audit and improve their existing process.
    • Create a recruitment strategy.
    • Provide templates and best practices for customizing job descriptions.
    • Implementation and automation of tools where appropriate to improve the HR process while keeping it human.
    • Scheduling systems and applicant screening methodologies, scripts for interviews, and grading rubrics for assessing candidates.
    • Onboarding guides and checklists.
    • Performance review structure and management coaching.
  2. Would love intros to:
    1. More amazing HR advisors/consultants who can help with the implementation of the above with the companies below.
    2. Companies looking to adopt a mission/value-centric approach to attracting talent.
    3. Companies that are new with HR and would like custom advice on end-to-end HR implementation.
  3. I will be in Madrid from July 1st-15th as a guest lecturer at IE University, welcome any introductions to people I should speak to in that region.
