Advisory Email – February 2019

In the view of transparency, below is an excerpt from an advisory email I sent this month:

If this is your first time receiving this, I’m putting into practice the concept of leveraging my network and being transparent. I’ll be sharing with you updates on this venture and wrap the emails with an ask. You’re welcome to support if within your means.

PROGRESS 🎉

  • Impact Career Fair is positively received.
    • RED Academy is potentially interested to come in as a sponsor (thanks for the time Sarah and Jess!).
    • Ian @ United Nations Association, Abraham @ UBC Careers Services, Kiri @ SFU RADIUS, Michelle @ B-labs, Meg @ Vancouver Economic Commission, and Tara @ BCITSA are highly supportive.
    • Jennifer from Preview Careers is keen on coming on as a co-organizer to support me with planning and making it happen.
  • Website is up for it.
  • Still working to finalize the venue, but front-runners according to priority are
    1. SFU Segal Building on Granville.
    2. Vancouver Club
    3. VPL Central Branch (but would have to move the dates to make this work, and there would be a cost to it)
  • Companies out:
    • Dwave – great company and really wish they would be in but they aren’t actively recruiting, also confirms my suspicion that this approach will be less appealing for companies that seek highly technical talent.
    • Nada, Social Nature, Modo, Keela, Wirefire – confirms that Mission+Values first approach to hiring WORKS, cause they don’t struggle with recruiting talent.
  • Companies in/maybe:
    • Bench Accounting
    • Coast Protein
  • Will be partnering with Charina Cruz and Preview Careers for March’s workshop on helping job seekers better communicate their values in an interview
  • There’s more interest than anticipated for listing on the platform, haven’t had the capacity to work on interviewing the companies and getting them listed yet: AVA, Tangoo, Avalanch Strategy, New Market Funds.

LESSONS 🎓

  • Did a poor job promoting the workshop for companies to define their values and identify gaps in their teams in February.
    • Targeting companies for workshops is more work than I anticipated.
    • Wife+baby fell sick and got busy with Spring work, but I’m making excuses here aren’t I.
  • Might find more success approaching marketing instead of HR departments for the fair.
  • Confirmed: companies that already have a strong employer brand centred around their mission and values don’t struggle with recruiting and have low turn-over.

SUPPORT & ADVISORS 🤝

  • Special thanks to the following for your time and insights this month: Aileen de la Torre, Lewisa Anciano, Jodie Hewson.

ASKS 🙏

  1. Impact Career Fair is open for registrations from job seekers, do share it out with job seekers in your network!
  2. Looking for more companies to booth:
    • Must have a clear mission
    • Must be impactful or sincere about adopting a more impact forward approach to how they operate.
  3. Looking for more potential sponsors who believe in this.
  4. Know someone who needs help defining their values or wants to learn about communicating them in an interview? Share March’s event with them:
