Every YES you say is a NO to something else. It’s important to learn to give a supportive NO in order to make yourself available for other opportunities:
I’ve recently had to turn down a teaching engagement, not once, but twice:
- Didn’t pay well enough.
- Too time-consuming (transit time) as I would have to facilitate in-person.
- Exposed me to higher risk of COVID (would have to take public transportation.
Had I said YES, I wouldn’t have been able to say YES to another project that I just closed because I wouldn’t have the schedule to:
- 7X the profit.
- Fully virtual.
- Much more aligned with my values + the type of client I enjoy serving.
A supportive NO is when you go above and beyond to provide more information and reasons so that they may improve for future opportunities or know when to re-approach you. (This is one of the many tips covered in my new book – UnReasonable Transformation)
